The history of Birkenstock is a story of dedication, innovation, and craftsmanship that spans more than two centuries. The family’s shoemaking tradition traces back to 1774, when Johannes Birkenstock was documented as a shoemaker in church records. Achieving the status of master craftsman, Johannes established the foundation for a family legacy centered on quality footwear and foot health. In the early years, the Birkenstocks lived a modest rural life in Germany, producing shoes entirely by hand. From preparing leather to forming soles and attaching insoles, every step was carefully executed. Footwear was an essential commodity for rural families, who often owned only one pair of shoes, making durability and practicality critical. Many of these shoes were repaired repeatedly or passed down through generations, highlighting both the scarcity of materials and the value placed on skilled craftsmanship.
By the late 1800s, Germany was undergoing significant change. Industrialization, the expansion of railways, and the introduction of electricity began transforming daily life, while mass-produced shoes became more widespread. Despite these shifts, Konrad Birkenstock, born in 1873, focused on meticulous craftsmanship with a strong interest in orthopedics. In 1896, he opened a workshop in Frankfurt and embraced the “shoe-reform” movement, which prioritized the natural anatomical structure of the foot. Konrad’s major contribution came in 1897 when he developed the first fully anatomically shaped shoe last, featuring distinct contours for the left and right foot, a rounded heel, and an ergonomically shaped sole.
In 1902, Konrad advanced his work by creating the first flexible, anatomically designed insole. Rejecting the common notion that feet should be immobilized to heal, he experimented with materials that allowed natural movement while offering support. After extensive research, he settled on a cork-based construction, which he called the “Footbed.” By 1925, the term was officially registered as a trademark for Konrad Birkenstock GmbH. Despite financial struggles and relocating to Friedberg in 1915, his insoles gained recognition, and Konrad began educating shoemakers in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria about the benefits of the “System Birkenstock.”
Konrad’s son, Carl, continued to develop these innovations. In 1936, he patented a handcrafted “ideal shoe,” although large-scale production was difficult. Later, Carl’s son, Karl Birkenstock, introduced a standardized footbed derived from measured average foot dimensions, resulting in the Original Birkenstock-Footbed Sandal launched in 1963. Its simple adjustable strap and flexible cork-latex footbed combined comfort with the philosophy of natural walking. Initially ignored by mainstream fashion, the sandal gained traction among healthcare professionals and lifestyle enthusiasts valuing ergonomic footwear.
Between the 1960s and 1980s, Karl expanded the line with signature models such as the Zürich closed-toe shoe, the two-strap Arizona, the Boston cork clog, and the Gizeh thong sandal. These designs merged health-focused ergonomics with timeless simplicity, eventually attracting attention from fashion-conscious consumers and celebrities. By the 1990s, Birkenstock firmly established its production in Germany, expanding facilities while remaining committed to ethical and environmental practices.
Entering the 2010s, the brand embraced professional management to guide international growth. The footbed remains central to the company’s philosophy, extended into sleep systems and natural cosmetic lines, emphasizing holistic well-being. Today, Birkenstock continues to innovate while honoring its heritage, sustaining its mission to promote natural movement, comfort, and durability—a vision that has persisted since 1774.
